Bringing the children closer to their land's History through the use of mobile communication technology

"Click... on History" is a new, innovative educational program implemented by the Foundation of the Hellenic World with the cooperation and support of Vodafone. The program's objective is to highlight local history through the eyes of students, by utilising mobile communications' unlimited potential in modern education. The program, which is addressed to Secondary School level students, is under the auspices of the Ministry of Education, Lifelong Learning and Religious Affairs.

The program in its entirety utilises the young people's contemporary digital environment, putting digital technology at the service of education. In the framework of said program, students, equipped with a mobile phone, used as a camera, video and voice recorder become "reporters of history". They shall explore their city, neighborhood and village, collect evidence from family photo albums, cultural traditions or public archives and create their own audiovisual presentations.

This research audiovisual material shall be uploaded through Vodafone's network to the http://local.e-history.gr/ web-based platform, which has specifically been designed for the program in question, so as to constitute a presentation tool of the students' projects to their parents, the school community and the broader public. In fact, the program utilises methods that stimulate students' interest, while giving the school community the opportunity to play an active role within local society and promote its work through regular exchange with other school communities.

The "Click... on History" program, constantly engaging students, teachers and researchers from the Foundation of the Hellenic World, brings an important contribution to students' education as far as research method is concerned, while it also helps them acquire skills regarding essay creation in electronic form through a process that is bound to have the students' attention. Last, it trains students in carrying out a collective project, since they must form groups, in which they need to cooperate closely in order to submit their final project.

Mr. Dimitris Efraimoglou, Managing Director of the Foundation of the Hellenic World, stated the following as regards the program: "Once again, the Foundation of the Hellenic World stands by students, keeping pace with Education and supporting it in any way it can. The 'Click... on History' program has not only been 'embraced' by the Ministry of Education, the teachers and students who have participated in its pilot phase, but it is carrying on on a greater scale, with even more participants and much more responsibility for our work."

Mrs. Angeliki Papantoniou, Vodafone Greece Corporate Affairs Senior Manager, stated the following regarding the program: "The 'Click... on History' program showcases that contribution of technology to the educational process can be substantial. Students, utilising the possibilities offered by technology, as well as Vodafone's reliable network throughout Greece, come closer to their land’s History and delve into collective projects and essays. The program's warm reception by students and the teaching community alike constitutes the most solid foundation for its expansion and further development."

The program's pilot phase has already been implemented in six public secondary schools of Greece, while twelve more shall be added by the end of this school season in the Prefectures of Attica, Ahaia, Evros, Evia, Lassithi, Lesvos, Xanthi, Pella, Rhodopi and Samos.

On the http://local.e-history.gr/ Website, visitors can navigate through projects created at schools participating in the program's first implementation phase from the village of Ayia outside Larissa, as well as the cities of Drama, Thiva, Nafplio, Nea Ionia and Chios.

This educational program aiming at highlighting local history is part of the wide ranging Corporate Responsibility program implemented by Vodafone focusing on utilising mobile communication technology in key social and environmental sectors.
