Haiti 2 years after...

23.01.2012 Share

Two years after the earthquake, Doctors of the World's teams, which have been in Haiti since 1989, and are made up almost entirely of Haitians (95%), pursue their work in a difficult context marked by political transition and reduction in funding by the international community.

In 2011, more than 250 000 consultations and surgical procedures took place at Port au Prince, and in the West, Central, Grande Anse and Nippes departments. Since the start of the epidemic in October 2010, MdM has introduced on a long-term basis programmes for the prevention and treatment of cholera. Today MdM manages 15 cholera treatment units, 3 treatment centres, and 28 oral rehydration points. This work is carried out in continuous co-operation with the national health authorities and local organisations.

Today, the reconstruction of the Haitian health system should guarantee genuine access to care for the most vulnerable. To build up this health system, Doctors of the World supports free access to health care for pregnant women and children under 5 years of age in Haiti, the first step towards an equitable health system.
